Chapter 1
The Beginning…

Eighteen years old Autumn Peters slid under the water in her bathtub. It had been one year and seventeen days. She had been counting, because she couldn’t let go…

Autumn walked to school everyday, it was routine and she knew everything and everyone she would see along the way. Hence it was a surprise to her when she saw an unfamiliar back of a boy that day walking in front of her. He wasn’t tall like all of the other boys; just about half a head taller than her but that was it.

She was even more surprised when she realized that they were both from the same school. She lost sight of him after they entered the school hallway which was flooded with students. She didn’t need to go to her locker for first period, so she walked to the classroom. She shrugged, casting the thoughts of the boy off her mind and slipped into her class. She was the earliest, as always. She sat at the back of the class, by the window, as always.

It wasn’t the fact that Autumn wasn’t attractive. In fact, she was beautiful. Her shoulder length light auburn hair coupled with dark brown eyes that sparkled whenever something caught her eye; she was almost perfect. It was just that Autumn was… what people would call, anti-social. She just wasn’t very good with socializing. People probably would have a huge group of friends after a year at school but not Autumn. She had nobody in school, nobody close. People who talked to her, talked to her for help on school work because she was good, but that was it. Nobody asked if she would like to have lunch together, or hang out together, although honestly, Autumn didn’t really cared much. She just didn’t like crowds.

Autumn loved to sit near the music room after school and work on her assignments, even if there’s none; she would just sit there and doodle on her notebook. People thought she just liked to be alone, but it wasn’t that. It was because of the music that came from that room. She didn’t know what the tune was; she didn’t know who was playing. All she knew was that it soothed her, somehow. She recognized the sounds were from a violin, because she learnt it too. She never saw who played those melodies as she always left once it ended while the musician was packing up.

This day, she took her bag and gathered up her books and left her seat. She turned around the corner and crashed into somebody, which sent her books flying all over the place. The boy, rather plump and tall, apologized profusely and bent down to pick up her books. Autumn mumbled “never mind” and started picking up her things too. She was reaching for the book furthest away from her, when another hand picked it up for her. She looked up to warm brown eyes smiling down at her, handing her book back to her. She took the book, muttered thanks, stood up and walked away from them.

Autumn had just exited the school when somebody tapped her from behind. It was the brown-eyed boy from just now. She just noticed that he was holding a violin case. “Hey.” He smiled and his eyes sparkled just like Autumn’s.

She was disoriented, nobody ever did this to her, this as in greeting her outside of school. “Yes?”

“Uhh…” He frowned a little. “Just well, Dane was worried that he might have er, pissed you off or something about just now. So like, I would like to apologize to you again on his behalf?”

Autumn was confused, “…Dane?”

He shuffled his feet, “Yeah, the guy who sent your books flying all over just now.”

“Oh. Don’t worry about it.” She shrugged.

“You’re not pissed or anything?” He asked again.

She gave a tiny smile this time, “No. Really.” She added to reassure him.

He gave a sigh of relief, “That’s good then. I’m Kieren by the way, Kieren Smith.” He held out his free hand to her.

She raised her eyebrows a little before smiling a little wider and shaking his hand, “Autumn Peters.”

They started walking as Kieren asked, “You’re in the literature class right?”

Autumn started, “How d’you know?”

He grinned, “I’m in literature too, just in the higher class.”

“Oh.” She struggled for words. “Are you… a transfer student or something?”

He chuckled, “No, I’m not! Haven’t you seen me around? I’m only a year older than you. I’ve been here since… I enrolled?”

“Oh.” Again, a struggle. A frown creased her forehead, as she tried to keep the conversation going. “I haven’t seen you around until today actually. I mean, around this area.”

“That’s because I just moved here yesterday due to well, a bit of a family problem but no big matters. So no worries.” Again, he smiled that warm smile.

Autumn nodded, and fell into yet another struggle for words. She was saved this time because they had reached a fork and they had to split. Kieren waved goodbye and strolled down the other path. Autumn stood for a while, watching the back of Kieren shrank as he walked further and further away. She blinked and walked home.

The door clicked open and Autumn walked in, into her mum’s arms. Her mum was always there to welcome her home everyday without fail. “Welcome home, honey, anything interesting today?” It was her usual question.

“Nope.” It was Autumn’s usual reply. Then she thought about it. “Actually something did happen.”

“Really? Is it good or bad?” Her mum steered her into the kitchen for lunch.

“Good, I think.” Then she added, “For now.”

“Now now, be more positive!” Her mum beamed at her.

“Okay.” Autumn smiled at her mum as she set Autumn’s lunch in place. “Maybe this time it’d be different.”

He’s really different, to be really honest. Sorry mum, I’ll make sure that he’s really different before telling you. Autumn thought as she started on her lunch.

Autumn waited until she had no air left in her lungs and she struggled. Then she broke through the surface of the water, gasping for air.
