Chapter 3
A Broken String Restrung.

An unfamiliar voice called Autumn through her locked bedroom door. She remained facedown on her bed. Her room was still tidy, mainly because she hadn’t touched anything for ages. Sunshine hadn’t been let into her room for ages because she hadn’t let them in. That went for her life too.

Autumn leaned back against her chair, her mind only mildly focused on the teacher. She was feeling feverish this morning when she woke up but didn’t fuss about it and now, she felt like she was burning inside.

“Well then, see you kids next week.” Mr. Johnson, the mathematics teacher dismissed the class.

Autumn felt lethargic, she shoved her stationery into her bag and left the class. A wave of giddiness hit her as she headed out to the hallway. She leaned against the wall for a while, waiting as it slowly ebbed away.

“Are you okay?” Kieren appeared from behind her. “Need some help?”

“I wanna go home.” Her voice cracked.

Seeing Autumn’s pale complexion, Kieren felt for her forehead, “God, you’re burning like crazy. I’ll take you home, alright?”

She didn’t protest but nodded, “I need the restroom first. Give me a minute.”

Autumn splashed water onto her face in the restroom, bent over the sink. She heard somebody or rather, a group of girls walking in. She looked up and saw that it was Candace and her group of cheerleaders. She dried her hands and was trying to make her way out but she was blocked by a cheerleader standing at the door.

“Excuse me please?” She said, still dizzy but managing.

“No, I don’t think so, Autumn Peters.” A bossy sharp voice rang out, and then the girl she saw the other day moved into her view. She was attractive, probably more without her make-up on. Her blonde hair swayed and bounced as she moved and her brilliant green eyes are shouting for attention, yet something ruined the beauty. It wasn’t the body hugging cheerleading wear, no. It was the look of spite on her face that somehow marred the beautiful features.

“So who do you think you are…?” She sneered into Autumn’s face, while Autumn was totally nonplussed.

“You. Are just some pretty nerd who has totally failed social class here in this school. Just because you are smart doesn’t mean you are accepted by everyone. Then again, you aren’t. So don’t even think about it.” She ranted.

Another girl piped in, “Hey Candace, why don’t you just get straight to the point, smart as she is, I don’t think she got you.”
Candace thought for a moment, “Yeah, you’re probably right, Charlie.”

Autumn’s world swam, but Candace took no notice and continued relentlessly, “So my point is. Get your hands off Kieren. You’re nothing to him, get it? I am the one that suits him. You are absolutely not comparable with him. So, get off him unless you wanna bring him down the social ladder with you. Understand?”

Autumn’s forehead was beaded with cold sweat and she clutched the side of the sinks for support; she had no idea what Candace was rattling on about.

“Candace, I think you should give it a rest now. She doesn’t look too good and you don’t really want Kieren to hear this. He’s just outside, y’know.” Another gentler voice chimed in.

“Shut up Winnie, nobody asked for your opinion. And don’t tell me what to do when you can’t even do a cupie with the correct expressions.” Candace snapped at her and Winnie looked like she had been slapped.

Autumn couldn’t take it anymore and she tried to say something but her voice wouldn’t come. She saw Candace’s mouth moved but she could hear no sound. Then she saw another kinder face saying something else and that was the last thing she saw before she got swallowed by darkness.

Seeing Autumn falling, Winnie shoved a stunned Candace out of the way and caught her before her head hit the ground. Cheerleading had made Winnie’s strength grow, she placed Autumn’s arm over her and supported her waist, half-dragging her out of the restroom. Kieren, who had been waiting outside with a worried look etched on his face, felt his heart dropped when he saw an unconscious Autumn.

“Thank God you two sweethearts are there.” Autumn’s mum squeezed Kieren’s and Winnie’s hands, giving them both yet another hug.

Winnie gave an awkward smile while Kieren said, “She’ll be fine, Mrs. Peters.”

Kieren had carried Autumn and ran all the way back to her home with Winnie hot on his heels carrying all of their possessions. Then Autumn’s mum had called the family doctor who’d promptly arrived. Autumn’s resistance and immunity to illnesses had always been low since young hence her parents were very protective of her in that particular sense, plus the fact that she was their only child. Still, Autumn didn’t want her parents to bother so much over her thus she often hid small things which she thought weren’t important from them. What she didn’t was that it worried her parents more like that.

The doctor, Dr. Vinci, had told Mrs. Peters that Autumn was just running a simple high fever which ran too high, but she was fine now. Then he prescribed some medicine and Mrs. Peters thanked him and saw him to the door.

Mrs. Peters left the two of them with Autumn and she busied herself with making a separate dinner for Autumn. Winnie stood awkwardly by the window; after all, she wasn’t close with Autumn. Actually, make that she didn’t even know Autumn in the first place. She’d probably got herself into Candace’s blacklist after shoving her away and helped Autumn, not that she’d really care since she was the supposed loser in the cheerleading squad before this.

Autumn’s eyes fluttered open, she still felt bad, but better than she was. All she’d remembered was falling…

“Hey, you’re awake.” Kieren smiled, speaking softly.

Autumn squinted a little at Winnie, who was lurking at the back. Kieren noticed where she was looking and said, “That’s Winnie. Winnie Brown, she’s from the cheerleading squad too. She caught you before you hit the ground.”

Autumn managed a soft “Oh.”

Winnie cleared her throat, “Yeah well, it was nothing. I mean, Candace was being a total bitch and all. As usual.”

“Thanks.” Autumn murmured, attempting a smile.

“I’ll go get your mum alright, get some rest.” Kieren squeezed her hand.

“Uhh, I think I’m going off too, now that you’re awake. I’ll drop you a visit tomorrow or the day after, okay?”

Autumn nodded and smiled, which made Winnie felt like she’d just witnessed the blooming of a beautiful flower. Her mum came bustling in with Kieren after Winnie left, fussing over her. Kieren, seeing this, also excused himself for the day.

“Honey, are you feeling better now?” Her mum asked, still looking worried.

“I’m feeling much better already, mum.” Autumn reassured her, “Plus, I think I have another new friend.”

“Winnie? She’s a sweetheart.” Her mum smiled, stroking her hair, “See, if you’d just open up a little more, you can make more new friends.”

“Maybe…” Autumn pondered over the incident just now with Candace, even though she could only remember half of what Candace said. Open up more, and get hurt more…? “I’ll try, mum.”

“Get some rest then, I’ll come up again when it’s dinnertime.” Her mum pecked her on the forehead and went downstairs.

Winnie… She’s… nice… Then Autumn drifted off to sleep.

“Autumn, open up, your cousin’s here to see you.” Her mum’s pained voice called out again. Autumn made no response, and then with what seemed like tremendous effort, she got herself off her bed. Cousin…? Oh… I think his name was… Egan… or was it Edan…? No wait… Ethan…? Whatever… What does he want anyway… Autumn’s aunt had heard of what happened to Autumn through her mother and Ethan had heard of it through his mother. They decided to visit her, just so to see if they could be of any help at all. Apparently, Autumn had closed up really tight again after that incident. She wouldn’t tell anyone anything at all.
