Chapter 4
Entwinement

Autumn opened her door an inch to see brown eyes blinking at her. She waited five seconds and Ethan didn’t say anything so she shut the door in his face just to hear him knocked her door again. She heard him saying about going out to the park together, get some food and talk. She sighed, they were doing it again. She sank back down onto her bed again, using her pillow to muffle the sounds.

Kieren was about to knock on the door of the Peters’ residence when a melody floated out from the house, from Autumn’s window specifically. He stood there and listened to the tune which he recognized as Schubert’s Ave Maria. It was a sad and lonely sound with a hint of hope. Kieren stood there for two whole minutes before the melody ended and he finally knocked. Mrs. Peters opened the door for him, greeting him with a bright smile. “Oh hello, Kieren, right?”

“Yeah, hi Mrs. Peters.” Kieren grinned.

“Come on in, Autumn’s in her room. She’s all up and about already. That dear, dear girl.” She chuckled as Kieren stepped in.

She shut the door and walked back into the kitchen past Kieren, while she called out to Autumn, “Autumn, Kieren’s here to see you!”

Autumn poked her head out of her door and saw Kieren waving at her, “Hey Kieren.” Then as Kieren started towards her room, she panicked a little, “No wait, gimme a minute, don’t come in yet!” She shut her violin case and shoved it temporarily under her bed just as Kieren peeked in from the door that she’d left ajar.

She straightened up, regained her composure and turned to Kieren with a small smile, “Umm, you can come in now…”

“What’s under your bed?” Kieren asked, smiling cheekily, dropping his bag down by the door.

“Nothing you should see.” She replied, shifting to block his view and used her foot to nudge the case further in.

Kieren sat down on the swivel chair by her desk, “So I guess you’re all better already huh?”

“Yeah, the temperature is almost back to normal but I’m fit as a fiddle now.” She beamed and sat down on her bed, facing him.

Kieren was about to reply when something sticking out from a drawer that wasn’t closed properly caught his eye, “Hey, what’s this?”

“Hmm?” Autumn looked at what he was talking about, just as he pulled out the piece of paper which turned out to be the music score for the song Autumn was playing. “Oh shoot.”

“So it was you that I heard just now!” He exclaimed.

Autumn flushed red and snatched the scores out of his hand, “You heard?”

“Yeah I did.” Kieren replied happily, “So is that your violin under your bed?”

As she replied, Kieren dropped to his knees and reached under her bed for her violin. Autumn immediately tried to prevent him from taking it out, but Kieren blocked her with his back and tugged the case out. He spun around rather abruptly as Autumn tickled him and he found himself face to face with her. He heard the sharp intake of breath from her and knew that she was also slightly taken aback at how close they were, and that their lips were a couple of inches apart.

He leaned closer and she didn’t move away, which he took as a good sign. He was centimeters apart when the door swung open immediately after a single knock and they jumped apart as Autumn’s mother walked in with a tray of cupcakes and juice. Her mum’s eyes twinkled but she mentioned nothing but only the cupcakes and juice before leaving them alone again. Autumn’s cheeks were a faint pink and it flushed an obvious red as their hands brushed each other when they reached for the same cupcake.

Kieren spent a couple of good hours at the Peters residence after finishing the cupcakes in Autumn’s room. They had gone back down to the living room and after some small talk with Autumn’s mum which resulted in her mum posing a challenge to Kieren in Wii tennis that got Autumn laughing until her sides ached. Autumn’s mum won in overall out of seven games. Kieren only won three times, one of which was thanks to Autumn’s help so that he didn’t lose too badly. (“Hey it’s my first time!” Kieren protested.)

Autumn walked with Kieren for a little bit after he bade Mrs. Peters farewell. They stopped at the fork again.

Kieren turned to Autumn smiling, “You should drop by my house some time.”

“Oh, sure.” She beamed. “We live so near each other anyway.”

“How ‘bout tomorrow?” Kieren asked, “After school?”

“You mean after your… music practice thing?” She replied.

“Well, yeah.” He shrugged and ran a hand through his hair, “You can come listen to us too.”

“Sounds good.” She grinned.

“That’s a deal!” He winked. “See you tomorrow then!”

She laughed but waved all the same. Then abruptly, Kieren leaned in and pecked her on the cheek then whispered, “That’s a make-up for just now.”

He chuckled a little at her state of shock and ruffled her hair before jogging off back to his house while Autumn stood there for a while before coming back to reality with a huge grin plastered on her face as she strolled home.
