CHAPTER THREE

“Did you see a small… packet lying here on the table?” he asks you, looking hesitant and guilty, for he knows that you don’t like what he’s searching for, what he’s going to do. Then again, he wants it so bad; craves it, that he doesn’t really give a damn about what you say – he’s going to have what he wants anyway, he’s shaking so much.

You force yourself to smile at him, looking up from the newspaper that you’re not really reading. “It’s on the bedside table, baby. I saw it there this morning.”

He just nods and disappears into the bedroom. Putting down your newspaper, you follow him, stepping through the bedroom door just to see him kneeling on the floor, quickly rolling up a dollar bill and then placing it on the bedside table at the beginning of a thin white line of powder. He snorts it up quickly, then after a while, relief washes over his features as the coke start to set in. He stuffs the dollar bill back into his left pocket, and then the brown paper packet into his back pocket. He straightens up and when he notices you staring, he smiles a little.

“I’m going over to Eric’s,” he tells you bluntly, and then wraps his arms around you, tickling your back playfully. “I love you, my baby, my beautiful baby,” he says, giggling into your hair, and you can’t help smiling although you know it’s the cocaine that’s speaking for him. “I’ll be back soon baby, don’t wait up for me.” You nod, and as you turn away to walk back to the sofa so you can return to staring at the newspaper, he smacks your butt playfully. You turn around and stare at his retreating back worriedly as he disappears out the front door.

You know Eric. Eric Dill. You went to high school with him and Joey, but you thought the both of them never noticed you then. Actually, they did – Joey had this massive crush on you, but he was too shy, and he was too busy being Eric’s best buddy and one of the popular kids in school to get to know you. Eric wasn’t attractive back in high school, but back then most people weren’t. He was this blond-haired kid who had the most amazing soprano voice you’d ever heard – he still has the voice now. Shit, you’re sure no boy could ever hit the high notes like Eric could. But no one ever noticed him then without Joey around.

Joey. Ah, Joey.

At first, you didn’t know him, didn’t know who he was, although you used to pass other girls in the hallway, whispering and gossiping about him, about how Joey Zehr smiled at them yesterday, or about how Joey Zehr casually hung an arm around their shoulders while talking to them, or about how Joey Zehr’s blue eyes made him look so hot. And instantly, you visualized that Joey was this guy who was a typical jock – someone that looked like an Abercrombie & Fitch model with a huge ego, and you had no interest in him what-so-ever.

But yeah, you were so wrong.

You bumped into him one day, when you were turning a corner on the way to your class. He was engrossed in a book – Shakespeare, you noticed – and he wasn’t seeing where he was going.

“Sorry,” he’d apologized smiling sheepishly, after he’d made sure that you were perfectly fine, and you stood there and watched as he walked off, struck by how blue his eyes were, and how they twinkled when he smiled.

Fast-forward to a few weeks later.

There he was. Or rather, there his picture was, held up by a red thumb tack on the large cork notice board, for all in the school courtyard to see. “STUDENT COUNCIL PRESIDENT” was above his picture, and below it, “JOEY ZEHR”, printed in block letters on a white piece of paper.

You were shocked. You had no idea that it was him, that the thoughtful, Shakespeare-reading boy was the Joey Zehr you had heard about.

He never talked to you any more, didn’t even say hi when you bumped into him sometimes, and you had thought then that he didn’t like you, or rather, didn’t remember you. You were hurt, but you moved on.

Fast forward to the day you met him again.

You’d just got back from New York, and you were in Tower Records on Newbury Street. You were clutching The Darkness’ Permission to Land album in your right hand, a Starbucks Mocha Frappucino in your left. You remember that you weren’t too sure about buying it, but somehow you wouldn’t put the CD down.

“Thinking of buying that? It’s the album of the week – you get a ten percent discount if you do.”

You had whirled around on a foot, and then all you saw were those blue eyes.

“Joey?” You thought you were dreaming. He was standing there, about a head taller than you, looking scruffier and definitely sexier and older than before, even though he was wearing a hideous yellow vest with ‘TOWER RECORDS’ printed on the left breast.

He looked startled. “Samantha?”

You nearly dropped the CD. “You know me?”

“Of course,” he had smiled, “We went to high school together, didn’t we?”

To cut the long story short, you ended up having lunch with him that day. And then the week after. Then he started calling and texting you every day. And then one night a few months later, he’d brought you back to his house, where he had prepared a small picnic out in his back yard. You had laughed at it all, because it was so cheesy, but yet you knew that it was too adorable and sweet of him to resist. And yes, he had kissed you under the stars.

You smile at all the memories, feeling oddly warm and whole as you sink down onto the couch.

Then the feeling goes away as fast as it came when you remember that everything has changed.
