screw updating every week, here's part 2.

chapter 3 shouldn't be up until the weekend

Chapter 3~Memories and Balcony Jams, part 2.

-Prom-

…I'm two quarters and a heart down
And I don't want to forget how your voice sounds
These words are all I have so I'll write them
So you need them just to get by…

Yup, they were playing Beka’s song, and she was going absolutely crazy on the dance floor with Carter. I was essentially watching them the whole night, with such a rage of jealousy. I honestly didn’t want to do anything else, I couldn’t take it. What’s worse was that I think Sarah was getting suspicious. I felt so bad that I had to be her date, because I know I wasn’t being a good one. She was such a great girl, she deserved better. But right now, I just felt sick to my stomach watching Carter’s arms around Beka.

As if the night couldn’t get any better, “Amazed” by Lonestar came up. I turned to Sarah, “Want to dance?”

A smile immediately escaped her lips, “Of course,” she answered back.

I led her to the middle of the dance floor near Beka and Carter, who were a little too close to each other at this point. No matter. I just pulled Sarah just as close to me and swayed to the popular country song and prayed Beka would see me. Every chance I had, I stole a glance at them, and the same expression stayed on Beka’s face: pure delight. She was at her prom, with a great looking guy, listening to great music, and having the time of her life. I wanted to be Carter so badly. I must have been watching Beka a long time, because she looked over at me with that huge smile on her face. I quickly looked away blushing, and Sarah noticed.

“Joe, what’s going on?” I looked down at her and saw how sincere she was.

“Nothing, there’s nothing going on,” I answered a little too fast.

“You like her. You like Beka, don’t you?”

“Of course not. Whatever gave you that idea?”

“Don’t lie to me, Joe.” She said in a harsh tone.

I sighed, “Am I that obvious?”

“You kinda gave yourself away when you couldn’t stop looking at Beka and you looked like you were about to kill Carter,” she said sadly.

“I’m so sorry, Sarah. I really wanted to have fun with you, but I just can’t get Beka out of my head. I really did try, I’m sorry.”

I was surprised when she let out a laugh, “Don’t apologize. Love comes in obscure ways. You seem to have found it in your best friend. It happens to the best of us.”

“That still doesn’t take back me being the worst prom date.”

“I’ll admit it, you aren’t the best, but I understand what you’re going through. I like you, Joe, I really do. But if you’re going to spend all your time thinking and looking at Beka, then I would rather be with some of my other friends. No offense…”

“None taken. And I totally understand. I’m actually going to head home before these two make me sick,” I said as I nodded my head in Beka and Carter’s direction.

“Are you sure?”

“Yea, I’m sure. Thanks for everything, Sarah,” I said and gave her a quick kiss on the cheek.

She definitely wasn’t expecting that, “Umm…uh…y-your welcome, Joe.”

I gave her one last smile and turned on my heels.

“Joe, wait!”

I turned back around, “Yea?”

She sighed nervously, “Well, if things don’t work out between you and Beka, you know who to call.”

She was such a sweetheart, I can’t believe I did that to her, “Of course. See you around.” With that I was out the door.

~*~

I walked outside, the brisk Denver air chilling every bone in my body, but I didn’t care. I found myself at one of the benches and just sat down with my face in my hands trying to figure out what exactly was going on. Then, something unexpected happened.

“Joe? Is that you?” A voice said.

I looked up and standing right outside the door was Beka, “What are you doing out here all alone?”

I just put my head back in my hands and sighed.

“Not having any fun either?” She asked, her voice much closer now. Then I realized she was sitting next to me.

“Not really,” I said looking at her.

“Is it Sarah?” She asked.

“No, no! No Sarah was great. It’s just that I…” I had to think of something quick, “I wasn’t feeling too great. So I told her I was heading home,” it wasn’t entirely a lie, I really did feel sick to my stomach.

Beka looked a little frazzled when I said that, “Oh my gosh! Are you ok?”

“Yea, I’m fine. I just really think I’m going to go home now,” I said getting up.

“I’ll go with you,” said Beka also getting up.

I turned to her in shock, “What? No! Stay here, don’t miss your prom. Really, I’m fine,” in truth, I didn’t want anything more than for her to come home with me.

“Joe, it’s ok. I want to leave,” she said.

“But why? You weren’t having fun with Carter?”

“He’s a nice guy and all, but we had nothing to talk about. I was literally just there dancing and he was just…there. So I told him I wasn’t feeling well and that I was leaving,” she answered.

I laughed, “You know you’ve been around someone too long when you start coming up with the same excuses to get yourself out of situations.”

She smiled, “Yea, seriously. Um, Joe?”

“Hmm?”

“Do you want to take a walk?”

I felt a smile come upon my lips. This was the first time she ever asked for a walk, usually that was my job, “Of course.”

By then, I could tell the wind was getting to Beka. Her cheeks and lips were turning blue and she was shivering like crazy. It being her, she wasn’t going to say a word to me. So I took my tux jacket off and placed it over her shoulders.

Beka looked up at my indignantly and started taking the jacket off, “Joe, I can’t take this. You’re gonna freeze!”

I held up my hand, “I’m not taking it back, I’ll be fine. You on the other hand are turning a lovely shade of blue as we speak.”

“Fine, you win,” she said as she put her arms through the sleeves and greedily pulled the jacket over her small frame.

I smiled and held out my right arm like I always do, “Come here,”

She grinned and I pulled her over to me. I felt both arms wrap around my waist and she buried her face in my chest.

“What do you say to a Tom Cruise marathon?” I asked knowing that Tom Cruise was one of her many favorites.

She looked up at me, “That would be wonderful.”

“Alright,” I said.

We continued the rest of the walk in silence, as usual. The perfect ending to a not so perfect day.

-back to present time-

I was back in my room casually tuning my guitar as my thoughts we swept back to that night. Yea there were some bumps here and there, but the ending of the night by far made up for anything bad that happened that day. I stopped for a second and looked out my window. Beka was still frantically typing on her computer. Our walks work every time, even as stubborn as Beka was, she knew it too.

When I finally convinced that every string was in tune, I got up off my bed and walk out onto my balcony. I pulled my chair over and started playing some chords, just humming along with the notes. It wasn’t much later when I heard a door slide open in front of me and out walked Beka with her keyboard.

“All done?” I asked.

“Yep, and my essay rocks,” she said with a very victorious smile.

“Say it, Beka, say it,” I prodded.

She sighed, “You were right, Joe, and I was wrong.”

“Yes I was. Now where was I?”

“I believe an A minor…”

We just played together for about a half an hour, messing around with different chords, and making fun of each other when we messed up. I only wish things stayed this relaxed.

REVIEW!!!
