CHAPTER FIVE
"Mom, I'm home!" I called out
"Sweetie, no need to shout." Mom told me as she was going down the stairs.
"Mom, this is Dougie. Dougie this is my mom." I introduced them to each other.
"It's a real pleasure to meet you ma'am" Dougie said to mom as they shook hands.
"Now, don't be too formal dear. You can call me Charlotte." okay, I have to admit my mom was a little cool.
I said a little. I bet he wasn't expecting my mom to be like that. Because me and my mom aren't too different, we're both always a little bit too excited and a little bit too quirky.
"I'll be in my room finishing my design, you kids have fun." mom said, and yeah, my mom's an architect.
Since I was a kid, I've been seeing little houses that are called "designs".
"okay mom." I answered her for a lack of a better sentence. I knew she wasn't going upstairs unless I answered.
"Your mom's pretty cool." Dougie said approvingly
"I know she is. she''s really different from other moms, that's why I love her." I said proudly
Dougie was looking at some pictures that mom had to put up.
"I really miss my mom now." He said
"You miss her? So you're not living with her?" I asked
"No, mom and dad separated back when I was nine. I have a little sister and she's years younger than me."
"Really? I never knew that." I told him
"Where are they now?" I added. I didn't know if it hurt that I asked him that. Because now, it's like everyone's breaking up. Like a fad or something.
"They're in England. My whole family's there. It's just me and my dad here." He answered casually.
"Wow, you must miss your family." I tried to sound sympathetic but then, I couldn't sympathize because all I knew was that my mom didn't have siblings and cousins and it's like I have no family at all.
"not really, I've only lived with them for nine years, three years being a baby, so that makes it six?" he laughed
"yeah, just six." I smiled.
"So, want something to drink?" I asked. I don't know why, but I saw my mom in my head telling me to ask Dougie if he wanted anything. That's why I suddenly asked him out of nowhere.
"sure, just a glass of water would be fine." he answered
"I'll make tea." I said. I am stubborn. That was stupidity right there. I haven't made tea yet. I've never learned anything about it.
"okay, that would be great" he answered. He seemed to be mocking me. That's so cute.
I went in the kitchen, but one tiny problem, I didn't know what I needed to have to make tea.
Dougie stepped into the kitchen.
"Why don't you sit down?" I asked him.
"no, I should be asking you that." he smiled.
I took the offer, I knew it was better that he made the tea because if I did it, we'll both fall asleep before I figure out how to do it.
I was observing how he did it. So that next time, I'll make tea.
*Ding Ding* The doorbell rang.
"Hold on, I'll go open the door" I told Dougie

It was Zeke, he looked windswept.
"You know, I asked her out!" he said breathlessly
"You did? I'm so happy for you!" I was genuinely happy. It was great that Zeke finally had confidence enough to ask someone out.
I hugged him.
"By the way, is someone over? I think I saw Dougie's car outside." He asked me.
"It is his car. Come in, I want him to know that you're asking Carrie out." I told him.
"Dougie, Zeke's here" I said as I peeped into the kitchen. Dougie was just pouring the tea he made into teacups.
"okay, I'll be right out." he said as I withdrew back to the living room couch.
"Hey Dougie!" Zeke greeted Dougie with his still over-excited voice
"hey dude" Dougie greeted back.
"So what have you two been up to?" Zeke asked
I didn't know what Dougie said because I was in the kitchen making another cup for Zeke.
When I was int here, I swear I heard them talking but when I got into the living room, they went silent all of a sudden. What were they talking about?
"You have to tell us everything Zeke." I asked eagerly.
"Everything about what?" he seemed to forget what he was supposed to tell me.
"hmm, let me see, err...who just asked Carrie out?" I was being sarcastic again.
I grinned.
"She heard Trixie telling people that the only reason she hangs out with Carrie is that her brother's cute. I feel sorry for her."
"oh, then?" I urged him
"She said it felt good to let everything out. She honestly thought Trixie was her friend, but she's fake. Like most of the popular people at school. The worse part is that she doesn't know who and who aren't her real friends. I didn't know how but I managed to ask her our."
"Lucky for you, dude." Dougie said encouragingly
I really felt sorry for Carrie. I just wished that she'd come to me and tell me everything like she used to.
But of course, this is high school, everything's a lot more complicated than it needs to be.
