CHAPTER SIX

I was eating at school alone
"Sash... can I join you?" It was Carrie, she usually ate lunch with the other cheerleaders and the jocks
It surprised me that she talked to me after years of ignoring me totally.
"Sure" I hesitated
It wasn't that I didn't like her or anything, it was a little scary because you never know what she was planning or something.
It felt really weird eating lunch with her again too
"Sash, you're not like them are you?" she said as she stared at Trixie and the others.
"huh?" I was confused by what she said
"you know what I mean, even if I didn't try to be someone I'm not, you'll still be my friend, right?" she asked me
I wasn't expecting this question and my brain was still trying to process what she just said.
I was speechless- literally- I didn't answer at all because I couldn't feel my mouth.
"I know you're my friend even if you don't tell me." she added.
Tears started rolling down her cheeks.
"Yeah, I'll always be the same Sasha you've known." I said automatically
But that didn't help her stop crying. It made her smile and then cry again.
Okay, it wasn't the best thing I would've said but it was the only thing I could manage.
I just patted her shoulder. If that happened a few years before, I'd probably hug her. But I didn't know if she still thought of me as her B.F.F. then.
"It's like I've been asleep the whole time." she said
"Well, at least you're awake now." I tried to cheer her up
"Isn't this like a deja vu?" she asked me, her tears drying up a little bit
"yes, just like when we were young and you fell face down off the swing." I recalled
"yeah, and my cheek was bleeding and you told me at least we knew that I had blood in my then chalk- white face." she finished it for me.
I haven't really thought about how much I missed her.
I missed my B.F.F.
"what happened to us?" she asked me
"high school." I answered shortly
we exchanged smiles
"I missed you" she told me
"miss you too" I hugged her then.
"We used to know everything and anything about each other." she reminded me
"yeah, I remember." I answered.
We talked about every possible topic that we could in the time lunch break allowed.

After my classes, I went to my locker to put my books there.
"hey." it was Zeke
"hey, where have you been all day?" I asked him because I really didn't see him the whole day
"in hiding," he answered with a sigh
"why?" I snickered, it sounded like a joke or something
"the cheer squad's after my neck." he answered seriously
"what the heck did you do?" I asked. I didn't think Zeke was a troublemaker.
"well, Carrie didn't tell you yet did she?" he asked me, obviously not waiting for a reply
"nope. Tell me." I told him
"okay, so I kind of... sort of... but really..." he hesitated
"what?" I demanded
"okay, I talked Carrie out of cheer leading." he finally finished
"you did not just do that, you know their inter-school cheering competition's getting nearer!" I said
As much as I wanted Carrie to be herself again, I didn't want to bring the whole squad down
"I'm positive they'll find another team captain" he said cheerfully
"yeah, and I'm positive they could find somebody in school that can teach them a new routine!" I shook my head.
I know it doesn't sound too bad for you, but really- do you think you can survive it if the whole popular crowd hated you?
It really sucks. And of all the times Zeke could have talked Carrie out of it, he picked that!
"man, we are so dead." I added.
"hey guys!" Zeke and I turned, it was Carrie
"hey!" Zeke and I said at the same time
"It feels great." she said
"you're not thinking about letting the squad down, are you?" I asked her, hopeful.
"what squad?" she said "since this morning, I don't have a squad anymore."
she grinned
"I don't want to be a cheer leader anymore and I hope they'd get over it." she said
"yeah, just be yourself. It'll really make you feel better." Zeke said.
I nudged his sides
"I guess I'll see you guys later, my mom needs me home early today." she smiled again
It's hard to believe how much could happen in one day.
"what was that for?" Zeke asked me as soon as Carrie was out of earshot.
"what? I thought we were supposed to talk her into cheering again." I told him the obvious
"I just can't help it when she smiles." he told me
"the way her eyes sparkle." he added
"too much info Zeke!" I said. It made me smile though.
I wanted Zeke to feel happy too. So I ended up being okay with it all.
How bad could everybody in the school hate us?
At least we have each other, right?

Before I slept, I had a moment to think of everything in the past few months.
Everything had changed in my usual boring life since I bumped into a nerd. Which only proves that high school is nothing without them.
