i've read a couple fics posted on these boards. the thing i find most annoying is that some people really don't have good grammar or spelling or punctuation. i mean, i don't caps my sentences, but if you feel this gives your fic a certain je nais sais quoi then have with it. but oh god, some things are just not acceptable.
example: "Anna what do you mean? kelly asked Well i just know something bad will happen. she said So do you guys have your dresses yet? i asked trying to change the subject. Yes and i have my dad too.Kelly said smiling Yeah your guys all have dates and i dont. i said You will find one trust me. Janetta said Maybe ill just stay home. i said No you cant do that senior prom is a BIG deal. kelly said yeah i guess your right. i said shrugging my shoulders. Hey ladies. Joey and ethan said while walking up to oour table. Hey baby .Julia said while kissing ethan. anna Ran over and gave joey a big hug. Where are the rest of the guys? Kelly asked Their in the music store.. still. Joey replied." This just annoys the heck out of me. Firstly, d'you see the "yeah i guess your right."? Yup, it's the inevitable you/your/you're thing. Why is this so difficult to understand? Why do Americans (or.. whatever, not meaning to offend anyone) have a seemingly worse grasp of the English language than I (an Asian) do? And okay, sometimes when I write I don't use the quote marks to indicate speech, but in the example mentioned above, this isn't acceptable, because it seems like quote marks are needed. Also, erratic caps. Some names are capsed, some aren't, so obviously, the lack of caps is not on purpose. Why, too lazy to caps? Well, too bad. Write good or mediocre fic, or otherwise, don't write at all. I apologise if I'm being too harsh, but I'm lashing out here because on these badfics, no one seems to be honestly critiquing the author's writing skills, only mindlessly praising the fic with "ahh it's so cute bump bump" (what is the bumping thing, anyway?). The worst was when I read chapters where the writer claimed to need time to proofread, but there were still errors aplenty. I kept thinking, "so what the **** is the point of your proofreading?" (The asterisks indicate a miscellaneous swear word, because I don't know which expresses my incredulity well enough.) I'm not saying that all fics on here are bad. Just that the bad ones do exist, and I don't feel brave enough to critique them like I would on fictionpress.com (where, yes, there is badfic abound). In fact, some fics with bad grammar or whatever else besides are actually not too bad, but still. You get my drift. In summary: Standardise your caps/not caps. Spell properly, for God's sake. (I typed "standardise" because I'm using British English, so I think using a Z would be incorrect, yes?) Punctuate appropriately. Watch your grammar. If you feel that breaking the rules of the English language gives something to your fic, then fine, do as you wish, but as long as it's standardised and it's clear that you're doing it on purpose. I hope this helped, and did not offend anyone. Apologies to the person whose fic I used as an example. |

I agree with you, ilovetheopera. I find it really very difficult to read stories without proper punctuation and stuff. I really hope people read this and take it in as advice because it is very good advice.

i wholly agree with ilovetheopera.
i've been trying to sort of stress the paragraph thing for awhile now, and sure, some people say "WHO CARES ITS STILL TEH INTERNET" regarding spelling, but do you realize that, if you're the kind who writes fiction like the one in the example provided above, your friends whose names you included in the fiction are the only ones commenting and they're doing it just for the sake of it? oh, and people need to work on their originality and write something OTHER than a fall-in-love/hook-up/break-up/hook-up-again/get married/have babies story. it's getting reeeeeeally old. |
