How can you be so sure that you're a Christian if you don't know whether or not you agree with everything? And in general, how can we as people even claim a religion before we DO know everything there is to know about it? Why are we so gullible as to just believe what we're told, or what we read, instead of making sure we really do believe in it for ourselves?

And I love posts like these, too. Especially when we have a good handful or two of people actually discussing everything, and not just ignorant people who aren't willing to really think about what others are saying as well. It makes me really question what I think and believe, and in the end makes me even more sure about it if my opinion/view doesn't change.

because back when i did go to church, i believed in everything i was taught (and still do) and from reading the bible some and researching christianity, i believe in everything about it that i've seen/heard.

from what i have learned, i know i'm a christian. maybe you or someone else don't believe that i can be because i don't know enough, but since i choose to believe that i am and i believe in what i know, i am a christian.

especially because of the things i've been through. there's one situation in particular (~sorry for being so cryptic. it's something i would absolutely never talk about in a public place and if you want to know, kait, you can ask me some other time) where i know for a fact that the things i believe in are totally true. i experienced it firsthand and learned that things that i was told were true.

dfkjhgdfg i'm so tired that this was probably worded horribly and made no sense.

I think I read your post a little wrong, Haley. I believe you meant it in maybe more... loose terms? And not like you're a hxc strict Christian.

And, I agree with Kayleigh.

" to expect us to all have the same views on what is right and wrong and what things should and shouldn't be done is ridiculous."

That is so true. But, this thread for example, I don't think anyone tries to really convince others of what is 'right' and what is 'wrong'. I think, for me at least, it's more about respect. You can think something that someone does is wrong, but you still have to respect them as a person. Whether they're gay, have premarital sex, drink, do drugs, what have you... they're still a person, and deserve the respect for being so.

I have absolutely nothing against gay people, but I don't think I would ever turn gay, because for me to do so, it is just strange; I like guys. But that's my preference. I also like the colour blue more than yellow, but if you prefer yellow, it really doesn't bother me. Same concept really.

I honestly don't think sexual orientation is a big deal, you like who you like, i like who i like, and we're both happy.

And btw Winnie, I'm buddhist too, and we don't really believe in God. Buddha is our Jesus, so to say. He's just like a teacher who's opinion we value, and we can all be like him.

loll i sound like some serious preacher of buddhism. But yeah Kayleigh, it is a religion AND a way of life and you pretty much understand haha.

And also, Kait, I completely understand where you are coming from, but imo you can still believe in the majority of a religion, but not minor aspects of it , and still be part of that religion, just not a 'devout' follower of that religion. And honestly, that's why I really like Buddhism, because of the fact that it lacks the strictness that most other religions seem to have and that leaves me to make up my own mind about the smaller things.

And homosexuality is one of those things which is not specified, and my opinion is that it really does not matter.

no, no. i'm a christian, but i'm not a super hardcore christian, nor would i claim to be.

i just haven't learned everything yet and i'm not going to lie and say that i believe in everything that has to do with christianity because i don't even know EVERYTHING. maybe i never will, but i still consider myself a christian.

yeah I also don't know everything about Buddhism, not even near that, but I still consider myself Buddhist. I think there are very few people who know everything about the religion they claim to be part of, and if these are the only 'true' followers of religions, they would be very limited indeed. Needless to say, I think it is completely unrealistic to say you must know everything that you are supposed to believe like the back of your hand, or that you must agree with it all. But whether you call it a religion/belief system/wtv, I think it is a great thing; I think it is important to believe in something, whatever it is.

gah that make any sense at all?

i jsut read through all 4 pages that i missed.
im glad that even though this is extremely controversial, that people are actually discussing this in a mature manner and taking other peoples opinions into consideration.
i have to say that when i first started reading someone's comments (stephanies i think?) about being against gay people...i got a little bit pissed. but then i realized that not everyone has to accept gay people for who they are...and thats perfectly fine with me. as long as you dont talk down about them, thats what really gets to me.
i dont know if that made sense...its late, but i jsut wanted to throw that out there.
